करनाल का इतिहास
दन्तकथा के अनुसार करनाल ( Karnal ) शहर को महाभारत के राजा कर्ण ने बसाया था। पुराणों के अनुसार यह क्षेत्र महाभारत से जुड़ा हुआ है|
ऐसा माना जाता है कि करनाल नगर में आधुनिक कर्णताल के स्थान पर राजा कर्ण प्रतिदिन सोना दान किया करते थे। यहाँ पर भगवान कृष्ण और दानवीर कर्ण की मूर्तियों पर सुंदर घण्टा बना हुआ है।
1573 ई० में अकबर के खिलाफ विद्रोह के समय इब्राहिम मिर्जा ने यहाँ लूटमार की थी। 1739 ई० में नादिरशाह ने मुगल बादशाह मुहम्मद शाह को यहीं पर हराया था।
1787 ई० में मराठा शासकों ने इस पर अपना कब्जा कर अपने आश्रित आडम्बरी आयरिश साहसिक जॉर्ज थॉमस को दे दिया था। 1805 ई० में अंग्रेजों ने इस पर अपना अधिकार कर लिया।
1909 ई० में मार्ले मिन्टो सुधार के पश्चात करनाल ( Karnal ) में मौलवी अब्दुल गनी पंजाब विधानसभा के लिए निर्वाचित हुए थे। यहाँ के निवासियों ने 1919 ई० के रौलेट एक्ट के जमकर विरोध किया था।
असयोग आंदोलन तथा 1942 के भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन में भी यहाँ के नागरिक सक्रिय रहे।

बाबा सिमरनदास का मेला – जिले के इंद्री कस्बे में अक्टूबर माह में बाबा सिमरनदास की समाधि पर इस मेले का आयोजन किया जाता है।
देवी का मेला यह मेला करनाल में पटहेड़ा नामक स्थान पर अप्रैल के महीने में लगता है।
गोगा पीर का मेला करनाल जिले के खेड़ा नामक स्थान पर भादों मास की नवमी को यह मेला लगता है।
परासर का मेला करनाल ( Karnal ) के ऐतिहासिक तरावड़ी नामक स्थान पर फरवरी माह में परासर का मेला लगता है, जिसमें भगवान शिव की पूजा की जाती है
पांडू का मेला इस मेले का आयोजन पपहना नामक स्थान पर प्रत्येक महीने होता है।

कर्ण झील – करनाल में स्थित कर्ण झील जो कि महाभारत के प्रमुख पात्र दानवीर
कर्ण के नाम पर बनी है साथ ही करनाल का नाम भी कर्ण के नाम पर ही पड़ा है।
कर्ण झील को करनार चक्रवती झील के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।
यह झील शेरशाह सूरी मार्ग पर जीटी रोड पर अवस्थित है। इसकी बिल्कुल साथ में ही ओयासिस नामक पर्यटन स्थल भी स्थित है।
कर्ण झील में ही कर्ण अक्सर स्नान किया करते थे और यहीं पर उन्होंने अपने कवच कुंडल इंद्रदेव को दान में दे दिए थे।
