सरदार पटेल को भारत में ‘लौह पुरुष’ या “बिस्मार्क ऑफ़ इंडिया” के नाम से भी जाना जाता है, सरदार पटेल, भारत के सबसे प्रभावशाली राजनेता थे|| भारत के प्रथम गृहमंत्री और उपप्रधान मंत्री ने अपनी दृढ़ इच्छा शक्ति, नेतृत्व कौशल से 600 देशी रियासतों का भारतीय संघ में विलय किया। इन छोटी-छोटी रियासतों का विलय करना आसान नहीं था। इसमें हैदराबाद भी शामिल है। आइए जानते हैं लौह पुरुष से जुड़े कुछ तथ्य:-
उनका जन्म किसान के घर में हुआ था और उनका स्वभाव भी किसानों जैसा ही था|
सरदार पटेल के जन्म की वास्तविक तिथि का कोई रिकॉर्ड नहीं है. 31 अक्टूबर को उनका जन्म-दिवस मनाया जाता है, इस तारीख का रिकॉर्ड भी असल में उनकी मैट्रिक की परीक्षा पेपर से लिया गया था|
गांधीजी की इच्छा का सम्मान करते हुए सरदार पटेल ने प्रधानमंत्री पद की दौड़ से खुद को दूर रखा और पं. नेहरू का समर्थन किया
गृह मंत्री के रूप में सरदार पटेल की पहली प्राथमिकता देसी रियासतों (राज्यों) को भारत में मिलाना था|
सरदार पटेल जी ने हैदराबाद के विलय के लिए ऑपरेशन पोलो चलाया था क्योंकि हैदराबाद के निजाम ने भारत में विलय से इंकार कर दिया था।जिस समय हैदराबाद के विलय की कार्रवाई की गई, उस समय पंडित नेहरू देश में नहीं थे।
वह एक ऐसे व्यक्ति थे, जिन्होंने संविधान सभा में प्रिवी पर्स के भुगतान की गारंटी का मुद्दा उठाया था. लेकिन उस समय कांग्रेस द्वारा इस प्रस्ताव को ख़ारिज कर दिया गया था
1909 में पटेल की धर्मपत्नी का हॉस्पिटल में एक ऑपरेशन के दौरान देहांत हो गया। जब पटेल को यह समाचार दिया गया, तब वह अदालत में जिरह कर रहे थे। इसके बाद भी उन्होंने अपना काम जारी रखा। अदालत की कार्रवाई समाप्त होने के बाद ही उन्होंने अन्य लोगों को यह खबर बताई।
सरदार पटेल ने सोमनाथ के भग्न मंदिर के पुनर्निर्माण का संकल्प लिया, जो पं. नेहरू के बहुत विरोध के पश्चात भी बना।
जब गुजरात में बूबोनिक प्लेग फैल गया था, जिससे पटेल का एक अच्छा मित्र भी इस प्लेग की चपेट में आ गया था, अपने मित्र की मदद के लिए पटेल उसकी देखभाल करने लगे और फिर वह भी इस प्लेग की चपेट में आ गए. इसके बाद वह तुरंत अपने परिवार से दूर चले गए और एक मंदिर में जाकर रहने लगे और ठीक होने के बाद ही वापिस घर लौटे थे|
सरदार पटेल कश्मीर में जनमत संग्रह तथा कश्मीर के मुद्दे को संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ में ले जाने पर बेहद क्षुब्ध थे|
गृहमंत्री के रूप में सरदार पटेल पहले व्यक्ति थे जिन्होंने भारतीय नागरिक सेवाओं (आईसीएस) का भारतीयकरण कर इन्हें भारतीय प्रशासनिक सेवाएं (आईएएस) बनाया।
यह तथ्य बहुत कम भारतीय जानते होंगे. भारत के इस प्रथम ग्रह मंत्री ने आरआरएस पर प्रतिबंध लगाने की मांग की थी. उन्होंने आरएसएस को हार्ड लाइन हिंदू गुट कहा था, जो भारत के महान नेता महात्मा गांधी की हत्या का ज़िम्मेदार था|
सरदार पटेल और जवाहरलाल नेहरु के बीच राजनीती को लेकर कई टकराव हुए थे. इसमें सबसे बड़ा टकराव था, जब नेहरु ने सरदार पटेल पर सांप्रदायिक नेता होने का आरोप लगाया था. इस आरोप के बाद पटेल ने नेहरु से कभी भी बातचीत नहीं की|
