इस सभ्यता की आर्थिक प्रगति के सूचक मृदभांड हैं। लाल चिकनी मिट्टी पर पुष्पाकार ज्यामितीय और प्राकृतिक डिजाइन बनाये जाते थे। हड़प्पा के मृदभांडों पर वृत्त या वृक्ष की आकृति भी मिलती है। सैन्धव नगरों के भग्नावशेषों के अवलोकन से प्रतीत होता है कि अधिकांश लोगों का जीवन सामान्य रूप से समृद्ध था। कृषि एवं पशुपालन सैन्धव अर्थव्यवस्था के महत्त्वपूर्ण अंग थे। हड़प्पा आदि स्थलों से प्राप्त बड़े धान्यागारों से यह सहज ही अनुमान किया जा सकता है कि अतिरिक्त अन्न का संग्रह राज्य द्वारा किया जाता रहा होगा। सामान्यत: नगरों में पूरे देश के संसाधन एकत्र हो जाते थे। अतिरिक्त उत्पादन का नियन्त्रण सम्भवत: हड़प्पा समाज में भी शहर के प्रभावशाली लोगों के हाथ में रहा होगा। संसाधनों के एकत्रीकरण की व्यवस्था, सैन्धव नगरों के विकास का एक कारण थी। हड़प्पा सभ्यता के व्यापक विस्तार का कारण, आपसी आर्थिक अन्तर्निर्भरता और व्यापारतन्त्र भी रहा। मूल संसाधनों का अलग-अलग स्थानों पर उपलब्ध होना सिन्धु नदी घाटी के विविध क्षेत्रों को जोड़ने का कारण बना। इनमें कृषि एवं खनिज संसाधन तथा लकड़ी आदि सम्मिलित थे और ये व्यापारिक मागों की स्थापना करके ही प्राप्त किये जा सकते थे। कहा जा सकता है कि सैन्धव नगर आर्थिक गतिविधियों के महत्त्वपूर्ण केन्द्र थे। सैन्धव सभ्यता एक विकसित नगरीय सभ्यता थी। हड़प्पा, मोहनजोदडो, कालीबंगा एवं लोथल के उत्खनन से प्राप्त अवशेषों के आधार पर विद्वानों ने समाज के विविध व्यावसायिक वर्गों के होने का अनुमान किया है। बढ़ई का अस्तित्व लकड़ी काटने हेतु अवश्य रहा होगा। ईंटों के निर्माण द्वारा कुम्हार जीविकापार्जन करते थे। सैन्धव नगरों के अनुपम नियोजन वास्तु विशेषज्ञ एवं मकानों के निर्माता राजगीरों की कल्पना सहज ही की जा सकती है। सोना, चांदी, तांबा, पीतल आादि धातुओं के आभूषणों, गुड़ियों, मुद्राओं, बर्तनों को देखने से प्रतीत हाता है कि सैन्धव स्वर्णकार अपने कार्य में पर्याप्त निपुण थे। वे धातुओं को गलाना जानते थे। तांबे की गली हुई ढेरी मोहनजोदड़ो में मिली है। चाहुँदड़ो में मैके को इक्के के खिलौने प्राप्त हुए हैं। हड़प्पा में भी पीतल का एक इक्का पाया गया है। मोहनजोदड़ो एवं हड़प्पा में गाड़ी के पहिये भी उपलब्ध हुए हैं। ये लोग धातुओं के अतिरिक्त शंख, सीप, घोंघा, हाथी दांत आदि के कार्य में निपुण थे। मोहनजोदडो से हाथी दांत का एक पात्र भी मिला है। अनाज को पीसने के लिए चक्कियों और ओखलियों का प्रयोग किया जाता होगा। बैलगाड़ियों का प्रयोग अनाज ढोने के लिए किया जाता था। बैलगाड़ी की आकृति के खिलौने चाहुँदड़ो, हड़प्पा आदि स्थानों से मिले हैं। इस सभ्यता के विविध केन्द्रों से प्राप्त वस्तुओं की एकरूपता तथा किसी एक क्षेत्र विशेष में उपलब्ध सामग्री की अन्य क्षेत्रों में प्राप्ति सुसंगठित अर्थव्यवस्था का प्रतीक है जिसके अन्तर्गत उत्पादित वस्तुओं के सामान्य वितरण में पर्याप्त सुविधा थी।

व्यापार एवं बाह्य देशों से संबंध

अन्य समकालीन सभ्यताओं जैसे मेसोपोटामिया, मिश्र आदि से सैन्धव लोगों का सम्पर्क व्यापारिक तथा सांस्कृतिक दोनों ही प्रकार का था। सैन्धव लोगों के लिए व्यापार का अत्यधिक महत्त्व था। इस दृष्टि से उन लोगों ने बहुत प्रगतिशील नीति अपनाई थी। उन लोगों के विभिन्न देशों से व्यापारिक सम्बन्ध होने के स्पष्ट प्रमाण मिलते हैं। सैन्धव स्थलों के उत्खनन से ऐसी पर्याप्त सामग्री मिली है जिनके लिए कच्चा माल आस-पास के क्षेत्रों में उपलब्ध नहीं था। अत: इसका आयात बाहर से किया जाता रहा होगा। सैन्धव नगरों का व्यापारिक सम्बन्ध मेसोपोटामिया तथा फारस की खाड़ी से था, इस तथ्य के अनेक पुरातात्त्विक प्रमाण मिलते हैं। सैन्धव सभ्यता की वे मुद्राएं सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण साक्ष्य हैं जो मेसोपोटामिया के विभिन्न नगरों में पाई गई हैं। विद्वानों की मान्यता है कि ये वस्तुत: व्यापार के माध्यम से वहाँ पहुँची थीं। कुछ इतिहासकारों की यह भी धारणा है कि सैन्धव जनों ने सम्भवत: मेसोपोटामिया में व्यापारिक बस्ती की स्थापना की हो। किन्तु, लम्बर्ग कार्लोव्सकी इस मत से सहमत नहीं हैं कि मेसोपोटामिया में सैन्धव लोगों की बस्ती थी। मात्र मुद्राओं की प्राप्ति को उनके अनुसार इस तथ्य का मौलिक आधार नहीं माना जा सकता। उनके अनुसार सैन्धव नगरों में निर्मित जिस प्रकार की वस्तुएं मेसोपोटामिया में मिली हैं, वे इस तथ्य के लिए पर्याप्त प्रमाण प्रस्तुत नहीं करती कि वहाँ सैन्धव व्यापारियों ने बस्ती बसाई थी, इस प्रकार की वस्तुएं सीधे सम्पर्क के बिना बिचौलियों द्वारा वहाँ पहुँचाई जा सकती थीं क्योंकि सैन्धव स्थलों में एक भी मुहर अथवा लेख मेसोपोटामिया का उपलब्ध नहीं हुआ है। दूसरे, मेसोपोटामिया में केवल एक ही ऐसी मुद्रा उम्मा नामक स्थल से मिली है, जिसे निश्चयपूर्वक सैन्धव सभ्यता का कहा जा सकता है। इसके अतिरिक्त सैन्धव स्थलों के उत्खनन में ऐसे भवन के अवशेष नहीं मिले जिन्हें मेसोपोटामिया शैली का कहा जा सके। इतना ही नहीं, मेसोपोटामिया के किसी भी स्थल से सैन्धव उपकरण पर्याप्त मात्रा में उपलब्ध नहीं हुए हैं। किन्तु, अधिकांश विद्वान् लम्बग कार्लोव्सकी के मत का सैन्धव सभ्यताओं के मध्य सम्पर्क को प्रमाणित करते हैं। सैन्धव जनों द्वारा निर्मित अथवा उसके सदृश अनेक मुद्रायें मेसोपोटामिया के विभिन्न स्थलों से मिली हैं। हड़प्पा स्थलों से प्राप्त बेलनाकार मुद्रायें मेसोपोटामिया में निर्मित अथवा उससे प्रेरित मानी जाती हैं। कुछ मुद्रायें, जो बहरीन से प्राप्त हुई हैं उन पर सैन्धव लिपि के चिह्न हैं। इस द्वीप में उपलब्ध अन्य मुद्राओं की तरह कुछ मुहरें दक्षिणी मेसोपोटामिया और एक लोथल से मिली है। हड़प्पाकालीन जो वस्तुएं मेसोपोटामिया से मिली हैं वे दोनों सभ्यताओं के संबंध को दर्शाने के लिए काफी हैं। हड़प्पाकालीन मुहर-मेसोपोटामिया के सूसा और ऊर में मिले हैं। हाल ही में फारस की खाड़ी में फैलका और बहरीन तथा मेसोपोटामिया के निप्पुर में सिंधु सभ्यता की मुहरें पाई गयी हैं जो चौकोर हैं, जिन पर एक सींग वाले पशु की आकृति एवं सिंधु लिपि उत्कीर्ण है। तेल अस्मार (मेसोपोटामिया में) से हड़प्पाकालीन लाल पत्थर का मनका प्राप्त होता है। उसी तरह पक्की मिट्टी की छोटी मूर्ति निप्पुर से प्राप्त होती है। मोहनजोदड़ो में मेसोपोटामिया की एक बड़ी बेलनाकार मुहर प्राप्त हुई है। लोथल से मेसोपोटामिया की एक छोटी बेलनाकार मुहर प्राप्त हुई है। लोथल से तांबे का ढला हुआ धातु पिंड भी मिला है। मेसोपोटामिया से प्राप्त एक कपड़े पर सिंधु सभ्यता की एक मुहर की छाप है। मध्य एशिया में तुर्कमेनिस्तान नामक जगह से सिंधु सभ्यता की कुछ वस्तुएं प्राप्त हुई हैं। लोथल से मिट्टी की बनी एक नाव की प्रतिमूर्ति मिली है। सिंधु घाटी में मानक माप एवं बाट के प्रयोग का साक्ष्य मिला है। हड़प्पा एवं मोहनजोदड़ो से धान्य कोठारों का साक्ष्य मिला है। संभवत: कालीबंगा में भी धान्य कोठार मौजूद था। मेसोपोटामिया में स्थित अक्काड़ के प्रसिद्ध सम्राट् सरगौन (2350 ई.पू.) ने यह दावा किया था कि दिलमन, माकन और मेलुहा के जहाज उसकी राजधानी में लंगर डालते थे। दिलमन की पहचान बहरीन से माकन की मकरान (बलूचिस्तान) से और मेलुहा की सिन्धु सभ्यता से की गई है।

बाह्य व्यापार से संबंधित देश- मेसोपोटामिया, ईरान, अफगानिस्तान, बहरीन, ओमान, सीरिया आदि। आयात, अलबस्टर (अर्द्ध कीमती पत्थर)-बलूचिस्तान, राजस्थान, डामर। बिटुमिन-बलूचिस्तान और मेसोपोटामिया। चांदी-अफगानिस्तान और ईरान, मेसोपोटामिया। सोना-अफगानिस्तान और ईरान। पेस्को महोदय (इतिहासकार) का मानना है कि सोना दक्षिण भारत के कोलार से भी मंगाया जाता था। टिन-अफगानिस्तान और ईरान। सीसा-ईरान और अफगानिस्तान। तांबा-राजस्थान (खेत्री) और लाजवर्त। मणि-बदक्शां और शंख और घोंघे-पं. भारत के तट पर फारस की खाड़ी से। फिरोजा-ईरान।

निर्यात- लोथल में बनी सीप की वस्तुएं, हाथी दांत की वस्तुएं, तैयार माल, कपास, अनाजों का निर्यात भी संभवत: किया जाता था। सिंधु घाटी के पक्ष में व्यापार संतुलन था। हड़प्पा में मेसोपोटामिया की वस्तुओं का न पाया जाना, इस तथ्य से स्पष्ट किया जा सकता है कि परंपरागत रूप में मेसोपोटामिया के लोग कपड़े, ऊन, खुशबूदार तेल और चमड़े के उत्पाद बाहर भेजते थे। चूंकि ये चीजें जल्दी नष्ट हो जाती थीं, इसलिए ये हड़प्पा सभ्यता में प्राप्त नहीं होती थीं। विशेषत: अमीर लोगों की आवश्यकताओं को पूरा करने के लिए बाह्य व्यापार को प्रोत्साहन दिया गया था। मुख्य रूप में विलासिता संबंधी सामग्रियों का व्यापार होता था।

महत्त्वपूर्ण बंदरगाह- लोथल, रंगपुर, प्रभासपाटन (सोमनाथ) बालाकोट, सुत्कोगेंडोर एवं सुत्काकोह प्रमुख बंदरगाह नगर थे। बलूचिस्तान आर्थिक रूप से एक सम्पन्न क्षेत्र नहीं था। फिर भी यहाँ के बंदरगाहों की बड़ी अहमियत थी क्योंकि सिंधु एवं गुजरात क्षेत्र के बंदरगाहों के विपरीत ये समुद्री लहरों से ज्यादा सुरक्षित थे। इसलिए बरसात के दिनों में बलूचिस्तान के बंदरगाहों से ही जहाज खुलते थे। लोथल एक ज्वारीय बंदरगाह (Tidal port) था।

 

परिवहन- मोहनजोदड़ो से पाई गई एक मुहर में नाव को चित्रित किया गया है। पक्की मिट्टी से बनी हुई नाव का नमूना लोथल में पाया गया है जिसमें मस्तूल लगाने का छेद बना हुआ है। अंतर्देशीय परिवहन का साधन बैलगाड़ी था। हड़प्पा एवं चाँहुदड़ो से कांसे की गाड़ी के नमूने मिले हैं। हड़प्पा सभ्यता में बैलगाड़ी में प्रयुक्त पहिए ठोस होते थे।

माप-तौल

उत्खनन में प्राप्त कुछ अवशेषों से ऐसा लगता है कि सिन्धु सभ्यता के लोग माप-तौल की प्रक्रिया से भी सुपरिचित थे। ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि सम्पूर्ण सिन्धु (होल) में माप-तौल की समान व्यवस्था प्रचलित थी।

सीप का बना मानक बाट मोहनजोदड़ो में मिला है। हाथी दांत का एक स्केल लोथल से प्राप्त हुआ है। फीट (फुट) लगभग 33.5 से.मी. का और क्यूविट 52.05 से.मी. का होता था। उपरी स्तर पर दशमलव प्रणाली, जबकि निचले स्तर पर द्विभाजन प्रणाली थी। गणना में 16 एवं उसके गुणक का प्रयोग होता था। पिगट ने उल्लेख किया है कि ये तौल 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 160, 200, 320 तथा 640 के अनुपात में आगे बढ़ते हैं तथा इस प्रक्रिया में 16 तौल की इकाई रहा होगा जो कि 13.64 ग्राम के बराबर है। सीप का एक खण्डित मापदण्ड मोहनजोदडो से भी मिला है। मैके के अनुसार, 16.55 से.मी. लम्बा, 1.55 से.मी. चौड़ा एवं 675 से.मी. मोटा है तथा एक ओर बराबर दूरी पर नौ का निशान अंकित हैं और दो संकेंत के मध्य की दूरी 0.66 से.मी. है। विद्वानों की मान्यता है कि इस प्रकार के मापदण्ड मिश्र, एशिया माइनर, यूनान, सीरिया आदि प्राचीन सभ्यताओं में भी प्रचलित थे। हड़प्पा से तांबे का मापदण्ड मिला है। माधोस्वरूप वत्स ने निवेदन किया है कि 3.75 से.मी. लम्बे मापदण्ड पर 0.93 से.मी. की विभाजक रेखायें अंकित है जो सम्भवत: 51.55 से.मी. के हस्त परिमापन पर आधारित प्रतीत होती है। लोथल से प्राप्त मापदण्ड, मोहनजोदड़ो से प्राप्त मापदण्ड की तुलना में छोटा होते हुए भी अधिक सही लगता है। यह मापदण्ड 128 मिलीमीटर लम्बा है, कुछ भाग टूट गया है, इस पर 27 विभाजक रेखायें 46 मिलीमीटर की दूरी से अंकित हैं एवं दो इकाइयों के मध्य 1.7 मिलिमीटर की दूरी है।
