स्वेज नहर
- स्वेज नहर लाल सागर और भूमध्य सागर को संबंद्ध करने के लिए सन् 1859 में एक फ्रांसीसी इंजीनियर की देखरेख में इस नहर का निर्माण शुरु हुआ था। यह नहर आज 165 किमी लंबी, 48 मी चौड़ी और 10 मी गहरी है। 10 वर्षों में बनकर यह तैयार हो गई थी।
- यह एशिया और यूरोप के बीच सबसे छोटा समुद्री लिंक है।
- यह जलमार्ग मिस्र में स्वेज इस्थमस (जलडमरूमध्य) को पार करती है। इस नहर में तीन प्राकृतिक झीलें शामिल हैं।
- दुनिया के पूर्वी और पश्चिमी भाग को आने-जाने वाले जहाज इसके पहले अफ्रीका के दक्षिणी सिरे पर मौजूद केप ऑफ गुड होप*** से होकर जाते थे, लेकिन इस जलमार्ग (1869 से सक्रिय) के बन जाने के बाद पश्चिमी एशिया के इस हिस्से से होकर यूरोप और एशिया को जहाज जाने लगे।

- विश्व समुद्री परिवहन परिषद के अनुसार इस नहर के बनने के बाद एशिया और यूरोप को जोड़ने वाले जहाज को 9000 किलोमीटर की दूरी कम तय करनी पड़ती है। यह कुल दूरी का 43 % हिस्सा है।
- स्वेज नहर की स्थिति और इसके महत्व को देखते हुए इसे पृथ्वी के कुछ ‘चोक पॉइंट’ में से एक कहा जाता है।

- इस नहर पर किसी एक राष्ट्र की सेना नहीं रहेगी, ऐसा करार था, पर अंग्रेजों ने 1904 ई. में इसे तोड़ दिया और नहर पर अपनी सेनाएँ बैठा दीं और उन्हीं राष्ट्रों के जहाजों के आने जाने की अनुमति दी जाने लगी जो युद्धरत नहीं थे।
- 1947 ई. में स्वेज कैनाल कंपनी और मिस्र सरकार के बीच यह निश्चय हुआ कि कंपनी के साथ 99 वर्ष का पट्टा रद हो जाने पर इसका स्वामित्व मिस्र सरकार के हाथ आ जाएगा।
- 1951 ई. में मिस्र में ग्रेट ब्रिटेन के विरुद्ध आंदोलन छिड़ा और अंत में 1954 ई. में एक करार हुआ जिसके अनुसार ब्रिटेन की सरकार कुछ शर्तों के साथ नहर से अपनी सेना हटा लेने पर राजी हो गई। मिस्र ने इस नहर का 1956 में राष्ट्रीयकरण कर इसे अपने पूरे अधिकार में कर लिया।
***केप ऑफ गुड होप- अफ्रीका के सुदूर दक्षिणी कोने पर एक स्थान है। यहाँ से बहुत से जहाज पूर्व की ओर अटलांटिक महासागर से हिन्द महासागर में जाते हैं। यह स्थान दक्षिण अफ्रीका में है। इस स्थान का एतिहासिक महत्व भी है। इस स्थान तक पहुँचने वाला सर्वप्रथम यूरोपीय व्यक्ति पुर्तगाल का बारटोलोमीयु डियास था। बारटोलोमीयु डियास ने इस स्थान को 1488 में देखा और इसका नाम “केप ऑफ स्टॉर्मस” (तूफानों का केप) रखा। इसी स्थान से होकर पुर्तगाली अन्वेषक वास्कोदिगामा भारत पहुंचा था।
