एक भिखारी किसी किसान के घर भीख माँगने गया। किसान की स्त्री घर में थी, उसने चने की रोटी बना रखी थी। किसान जब घर आया, उसने अपने बच्चों का मुख चूमा, स्त्री ने उनके हाथ पैर धुलाये, उसके बाद वह रोटी खाने बैठ गया। स्त्री ने एक मुट्ठी चना भिखारी को डाल दिया, भिखारी चना लेकर चल दिया।
रास्ते में भिखारी सोचने लगा, “हमारा भी कोई जीवन है? दिन भर कुत्ते की तरह माँगते फिरते हैं। फिर स्वयं बनाना पड़ता है। इस किसान को देखो कैसा सुन्दर घर है। घर में स्त्री है, बच्चे हैं, अपने आप अन्न पैदा करता है। बच्चों के साथ प्रेम से भोजन करता है। वास्तव में सुखी तो यह किसान है।
इधर वह किसान रोटी खाते-खाते अपनी स्त्री से कहने लगा, “नीला बैलe बहुत बुड्ढा हो गया है, अब वह किसी तरह काम नहीं देता, यदि कहीं से कुछ रुपयों का इन्तजाम हो जाये तो इस साल का काम चले। साधोराम महाजन के पास जाऊँगा, वह ब्याज पर दे देगा।”
भोजन करके वह साधोराम महाजन के पास गया। बहुत देर चिरौरी विनती करने पर 1रु. सैकड़ा सूद पर साधों ने रुपये देना स्वीकार किया। एक लोहे की तिजोरी में से साधोराम ने एक थैली निकाली और गिनकर रुपये किसान को दे दिये।
रुपये लेकर किसान अपने घर को चला, वह रास्ते में सोचने लगा- “हम भी कोई आदमी हैं, घर में 5 रु. भी नकद नहीं। कितनी चिरौरी विनती करने पर उसने रुपये दिये हैं। साधो कितना धनी है, उसके पास सैकड़ों रुपये हैं।” वास्तव में सुखी तो यह साधो राम ही है। साधोराम छोटी सी दुकान करता था, वह एक बड़ी दुकान से कपड़े ले आता था और उसे बेचता था।
दूसरे दिन साधोराम कपड़े लेने गया, वहाँ सेठ पृथ्वीचन्द की दुकान से कपड़ा लिया। वह वहाँ बैठा ही था कि इतनी देर में कई तार आए कोई बम्बई का था तो कोई कलकत्ते का, किसी में लिखा था 5 लाख मुनाफा हुआ, किसी में एक लाख का। साधो महाजन यह सब देखता रहा, कपड़ा लेकर वह चला आया। रास्ते में सोचने लगा, “हम भी कोई आदमी हैं, सौ दो सौ जुड़ गये महाजन कहलाने लगे। पृथ्वीचन्द कैसे हैं, एक दिन में लाखों का फायदा। “वास्तव में सुखी तो यह है, उधर पृथ्वीचन्द बैठा ही था, कि इतने ही में तार आया कि 5 लाख का घाटा हुआ। वह बड़ी चिन्ता में था कि नौकर ने कहा, आज लाट साहब की रायबहादुर सेठ के यहाँ दावत है। आपको जाना है, मोटर तैयार है।”
पृथ्वीचन्द मोटर पर चढ़ कर रायबहादुर की कोठी पर चला गया। वहाँ सोने चाँदी की कुर्सियाँ पड़ी थी, रायबहादुर जी से कलक्टर-कमिश्नर हाथ मिला रहे थे। बड़े-बड़े सेठ खड़े थे। वहाँ पृथ्वीचन्द सेठ को कौन पूछता, वे भी एक कुर्सी पर जाकर बैठ गया। लाट साहब आये, राय बहादुर से हाथ मिलाया, उनके साथ चाय पी और चले गये।
पृथ्वीचन्द अपनी मोटर में लौट रहें थे, रास्ते में सोचते आते हैं, हम भी कोई सेठ हैं, 5 लाख के घाटे से ही घबड़ा गये। राय बहादुर का कैसा ठाठ है, लाट साहब उनसे हाथ मिलाते हैं। “वास्तव में सुखी तो ये ही है।”
अब इधर लाट साहब के चले जाने पर रायबहदुर के सिर में दर्द हो गया, बड़े-बड़े डॉक्टर आये एक कमरे वे पड़े थे। कई तार घाटे के एक साथ आ गये थे। उनकी भी चिन्ता थी, कारोबार की भी बात याद आ गई। वे चिन्ता में पड़े थे, तभी खिड़की से उन्होंने झाँक कर नीचे देखा, एक भिखारी हाथ में एक डंडा लिये अपनी मस्ती में जा रहा था। राय बहदुर ने उसे देखा और बोले, “वास्तव में तो सुखी यही है, इसे न तो घाटे की चिन्ता न मुनाफे की फिक्र, इसे लाट साहब को पार्टी भी नहीं देनी पड़ती, सुखी तो यही है।”
