लुक़मान था तो सिर्फ एक गुलाम लेकिन वह बड़ा ही चतुर और बुद्धिमान था। उसकी ख्याति दूर दराज़ के इलाकों में फैलने लगी थी।

एक दिन इस बात की खबर उसके मालिक को लगी, मालिक ने लुक़मान को बुलाया और कहा- सुनते हैं, कि तुम बहुत बुद्धिमान हो। मैं तुम्हारी बुद्धिमानी की परीक्षा लेना चाहता हूँ। अगर तुम इम्तिहान में पास हो गए तो तुम्हें गुलामी से छुट्टी दे दी जाएगी। अच्छा जाओ, एक मरे हुए बकरे को काटो और उसका जो हिस्सा बढ़िया हो, उसे ले आओ।

लुक़मान ने आदेश का पालन किया और मरे हुए बकरे की जीभ लाकर मालिक के सामने रख दी।

कारण पूछने पर कि जीभ ही क्यों लाया ! लुक़मान ने कहा- अगर शरीर में जीभ अच्छी हो तो सब कुछ अच्छा-ही-अच्छा होता है।

मालिक ने आदेश देते हुए कहा- “अच्छा! इसे उठा ले जाओ और अब बकरे का जो हिस्सा बुरा हो उसे ले आओ।”

लुक़मान बाहर गया, लेकिन थोड़ी ही देर में उसने उसी जीभ को लाकर मालिक के सामने फिर रख दिया।

फिर से कारण पूछने पर लुक़मान ने कहा- “अगर शरीर में जीभ अच्छी नहीं तो सब बुरा-ही-बुरा है। “

उसने आगे कहते हुए कहा- “मालिक! वाणी तो सभी के पास जन्मजात होती है, परन्तु बोलना किसी-किसी को ही आता है…क्या बोलें? कैसे शब्द बोलें, कब बोलें.. इस एक कला को बहुत ही कम लोग जानते हैं। एक बात से प्रेम झरता है और दूसरी बात से झगड़ा होता है।

कड़वी बातों ने संसार में न जाने कितने झगड़े पैदा किये हैं। इस जीभ ने ही दुनिया में बड़े-बड़े कहर ढाये हैं।जीभ तीन इंच का वो हथियार है जिससे कोई छः फिट के आदमी को भी मार सकता है तो कोई मरते हुए इंसान में भी प्राण फूंक सकता है । संसार के सभी प्राणियों में वाणी का वरदान मात्र मानव को ही मिला है। उसके सदुपयोग से स्वर्ग पृथ्वी पर उतर सकता है और दुरूपयोग से स्वर्ग भी नरक में परिणत हो सकता है। भारत के विनाशकारी महाभारत का युद्ध वाणी के गलत प्रयोग का ही परिणाम था। “

मालिक, लुक़मान की बुद्धिमानी और चतुराई भरी बातों को सुनकर बहुत खुश हुए ; आज उनके गुलाम ने उन्हें एक बहुत बड़ी सीख दी थी और उन्होंने उसे आजाद कर दिया।
