किसी गांव में एक गड़रिया रहता था। वह लालची स्वभाव का था, हमेशा यही सोचा करता था कि किस प्रकार वह गांव में सबसे अमीर हो जाये। उसके पास कुछ बकरियां और उनके बच्चे थे। जो उसकी जीविका के साधन थे।
एक बार वह गांव से दूर जंगल के पास पहाड़ी पर अपनी बकरियों को चराने ले गया। अच्छी घास ढूँढने के चक्कर में आज वो एक नए रास्ते पर निकल पड़ा। अभी वह कुछ ही दूर आगे बढ़ा था कि तभी अचानक तेज बारिश होने लगी और तूफानी हवाएं चलने लगीं। तूफान से बचने के लिए गड़रिया कोई सुरक्षित स्थान ढूँढने लगा। उसे कुछ ऊँचाई पर एक गुफा दिखाई दी। गड़रिया बकरियों को वहीँ बाँध उस जगह का जायजा लेने पहुंचा तो उसकी आँखें फटी की फटी रह गयीं। वहां बहुत सारी जंगली भेड़ें मौजूद थीं।
मोटी- तगड़ी भेड़ों को देखकर गड़रिये को लालच आ गया। उसने सोचा कि अगर ये भेड़ें मेरी हो जाएं तो मैं गांव में सबसे अमीर हो जाऊंगा। इतनी अच्छी और इतनी ज्यादा भेड़ें तो आस-पास के कई गाँवों में किसी के पास नहीं हैं।
उसने मन ही मन सोचा कि मौका अच्छा है मैं कुछ ही देर में इन्हें बहला-फुसलाकर अपना बना लूंगा। फिर इन्हें साथ लेकर गांव चला जाऊंगा।
यही सोचते हुए वह वापस नीचे उतरा। बारिश में भीगती अपनी दुबली-पतली कमजोर बकरियों को देखकर उसने सोचा कि अब जब मेरे पास इतनी सारी हट्टी-कट्टी भेडें हैं तो मुझे इन बकरियों की क्या ज़रुरत उसने फ़ौरन बकरियों को खोल दिया और बारिश में भीगने की परवाह किये बगैर कुछ रस्सियों की मदद से घास का एक बड़ा गट्ठर तैयार कर लिया.
गट्ठर लेकर वह एक बार फिर गुफा में पहुंचा और काफी देर तक उन भेड़ों को अपने हाथ से हरी-हरी घास खिलाता रहा। जब तूफान थम गया, तो वह बाहर निकला। उसने देखा कि उसकी सारी बकरियां उस स्थान से कहीं और जा चुकी थीं।
गड़ेरिये को इन बकरियों के जाने का कोई अफ़सोस नहीं था, बल्कि वह खुश था कि आज उसे मुफ्त में एक साथ इतनी अच्छी भेडें मिल गयी हैं। यही सोचते-सोचते वह वापस गुफा की ओर मुड़ा लेकिन ये क्या… बारिश थमते ही भेडें वहां से निकल कर दूसरी तरफ जान लगीं। वह तेजी से दौड़कर उनके पास पहुंचा और उन्हें अपने साथ ले जाने की कोशिश करने लगा। पर भेडें बहुत थीं, वह अकेला उन्हें नियंत्रित नहीं कर सकता था… कुछ ही देर में सारी भेडें उसकी आँखों से ओझल हो गयीं।
यह सब देख गड़रिये को गुस्सा आ गया। उसने चिल्लाकर बोला– तुम्हारे लिए मैंने अपनी बकरियों को बारिश में बाहर छोड़ दिया। इतनी मेहनत से घास काट कर खिलाई और तुम सब मुझे छोड़ कर चली गयी… सचमुच कितनी स्वार्थी हो तुम सब। गड़रिया बदहवास होकर वहीं बैठ गया। गुस्सा शांत होने पर उसे समझ आ गया कि दरअसल स्वार्थी वो भेडें नहीं बल्कि वो खुद है, जिसने भेड़ों की लालच में आकर अपनी बकरियां भी खो दीं।
