थारू Tharus
निवास क्षेत्र- थारू जाति का आवास क्षेत्र उत्तर प्रदेश व उत्तरांचल के तराई प्रदेश के पश्चिमी भाग में नैनीताल जिले के दक्षिण-पूर्व से लेकर पूर्व में गोरखपुर और नेपाल की सीमा के सहारे है। थारू जनजाति का सबसे अधिक जमाव उत्तरांचल राज्य के नैनीताल जिले में है। इनमें से मुख्य बस्तियाँ, किलपुरी, खातीमाता विलहेरी नानकमाता है। इनकी वर्तमान में संख्या 28 हजार के आसपास है। प्रान्तीय सरकार ने इन्हें 1961 जनजाति का दर्जा प्रदान किया था।
थारू शब्द की उत्पत्ति के बारे में विद्वानों में काफी मतभेद है। अवध गजेटियर के अनुसार थारू का शाब्दिक अर्थ ठहरे(Tahre) है, नोल्स के अनुसार थारू लोगों में अपहरण विवाह की प्रथा होने से इन्हें थारू कहा जाने लगा। कुछ की मान्यता है कि जब राजपूत और मुसलमानों के बीच युद्ध हुआ तो ये लोग हस्तिनापुर से डरकर या थरथराते हुए यहाँ आकर रुक गये, अतः इन्हें थथराना (Thatharana) कहा गया। जंगल में रहने वाली होने से भी यह जाति थारू कहलाती है। कुछ विद्वान थार मरुस्थल से आने के कारण थारू शब्द की उत्पत्ति मानते हैं।
थारू जनजाति जाय मल फतेहसिंह और तरनसिंह को अपना पूर्वज मानती हैं।थारू स्त्रियाँ अपने को उच्च कुल की मानती हैं और इन्हें अब भी रानी कहा जाता है। यह इस तथ्य से स्पष्ट होता है कि यारूओं में स्त्रियों का अपने पतियों पर प्रभुत्व रहता है। ये लोग अत्यन्त लम्बे समय से तराई में रहते आये हैं।
शारीरिक लक्षण- नेसफील्ड के मतानुसार थारू अन्य भारतीय लोगों से मिलते-जुलते हैं, भले ही उनमें अन्तर्विवाह के फलस्वरूप मिश्रित लक्षण पाये जाते हों। मजूमदार का मत है कि इनकी शारीरिक रचना मंगोलॉइड प्रजाति से मिलतीजुलती है, जैसे तिरछे नेत्र, गाल की हड्डियाँ उभरी हुई, रंग भूरा या भूरा-पीला, शरीर और चेहरे पर बहुत कम और सीधे बाल, मध्यम और सीधे आकार की नाक, आदि। जबकि अन्य शारीरिक लक्षणों में ये नेपालियों से मिलते-जुलते हैं क्योंकि कई शताब्दियों से इनके वैवाहिक सम्बन्ध नेपाल के दक्षिणी क्षेत्रों से रहे हैं। थारू स्त्रियों का रंग अधिक साफ होता है। इनका चेहरा कुछ लम्वाकार, अथवा गोल, स्तन गोल, छठे हुए एवं नुकीले, पिंडलियाँ अधिक विकसित और होंठ पतले होते हैं, किन्तु सिर कुछ लम्बा होता है और आँखें काले रंग की। वास्तविकता यह है कि थारूओं में मंगोलॉइड और भारतीय जातियाँ दोनों के ही मिश्रित शारीरिक लक्षण दृष्टिगोचर होते हैं। थारुओं (पुरुषों) का औसत कद आज भी छोटा होता है।
वातावरण- थारूओं का तराई क्षेत्र लगभग 600 किमी. लम्बा और 25 किमी. चौड़ा तथा 15,600 वर्ग किमी. क्षेत्र में फैला निम्न दलदली भाग है जिसमें यत्र-तत्र ऊँचे-नीचे भाग मिलते हैं जिनमें होकर मुख्य नदियाँ गंडक, शारदा, घाघरा, गोमती और रामगंगा हैं। इन मागों में असमान वर्षा और सदा परिवर्तित होने वाले ढालों के कारण सम्पूर्ण क्षेत्र बाढ़ग्रस्त और दलदली रहता है, अतः यहाँ की जलवायु अस्वास्थ्यकर रहती है। तापमान का औसत शीतकाल में 12सेण्टीग्रेड से ग्रीष्मकाल में 15सेण्टीग्रेड तक रहता है। वर्ष के 6 महीने तेज गर्मी पड़ती है। वर्षा जून से सितम्बर के बीच 125 से 150 सेण्टीमीटर के बीच हो जाती है। अधिक ऊँचे तापमान और आर्द्रता के कारण इन भागों में मलेरिया का प्रकोप अधिक होता है। अस्वास्थ्यकर जलवायु के कारण ही थारुओं के निवास क्षेत्र को मृत्यु का देश (Mar or the land of Death) कहा जाता है।।
इस क्षेत्र में मांसाहारी तथा जंगली पशु अधिक मिलते हैं- चीते, , भालू, जंगली हाथी, नीलगाय तथा साँड़, अनेक प्रकार के भेड़िये, सियार, हिरन, एण्टीलोप, चीतल, अजगर तथा बन्दर मिलते हैं। वृक्षों पर अनेक प्रकार की चिड़ियाँ, मोर, बाज तथा नदियों में मछलियाँ पायी जाती हैं।
बस्तियाँ एवं घर- थारू बस्ती का आकार पुरवे की भाँति होता है जिसमें 20 से 30 घर होते हैं। ये पुरवे बिखरे हुए तथा एक दूसरे से 3 से 4 किलोमीटर के अन्तर पर होते हैं। भूमि का अपेक्षाकृत ऊँचा होना, मीठे जल की प्राप्ति निकटवर्ती क्षेत्रों में हो, जंगली पशुओं और बीमारियों से सुरक्षा मिल सके तथा भूमि उपजाऊ हो। यदि इनमें से किसी भी तथ्य का अभाव होने लगे तो ये लोग अपने गाँवों को त्याग देते हैं और अन्यत्र चले जाते हैं। इन बस्तियों में कोई धार्मिक स्थान नहीं होता। केवल एक ऊँचा चबूतरा बना होता है जिस पर ग्रामीण देवी की प्रतिमास्वरूप कोई चिन्ह रख दिया जाता है। इनके यहाँ मेहमानों के लिए ठहरने का स्थान और अनाज के अलग कोठार गृह होते हैं तथा सामुदायिक गृह नहीं होते।
थारू लोगों के घर मिट्टी, घास और लकड़ी की सहायता से बनाये जाते हैं। घरों की दीवारें बजरी और खड़िया से बनायी जाती हैं और छतें और छप्पर और खार घासों से 30 सेंटीमीटर मोटे बनाये जाते हैं। मकानों की छतें शंक्वाकार बनायी जाती हैं। बाँस, लट्टे, चौड़ी पतियों को मिट्टी से सान कर दीवारों पर लगा दिया जाता है। मकानों का मुंह प्रायः पूर्व की ओर रखा जाता है। दीवारों पर थारू स्त्रियों द्वारा खड़िया से हाथी, घोड़े तथा अन्य, चित्रादि बनाये जाते हैं। फर्श को लीपा जाता है तथा त्योहारों के अवसर पर माण्डने माण्डे जाते हैं। सामान्यतः एक मकान के दो या चार (खण्ड) किये जाते हैं। इनके बीच में कोई पर्दा नहीं होता। केवल मिट्टी की बनी अनाज भरने की कुठिया या कुथरा दीवार का काम करती है। भीतरी भाग बर्तन रखने और खाना बनाने के काम आता है। बाहरी कमरे के पिछले भाग में बेटा-बहू के सोने का स्थान होता है। छत से डोरियाँ लटकाकर मछली पकड़ने के जाल, खाली घड़े, कृषि के औजार एवं सामान रखा जाता है। प्रत्येक घर के सामने एक छोटा मन्दिर होता है जिसमें चबूतरे पर दुर्गा, ठाकुर, आदि देवी-देवताओं की पूजा की जाती है। घर के एक तरफ पशुओं के लिए बाड़ा या सार और साग-सब्जी पैदा करने के लिए बाड़ी बनायी जाती है। अनेक समृद्ध थारुओं के मकान पक्के होते हैं जिन्हें बंगला कहा जाता है। थारू लोगों के घर बड़े साफसुथरे होते हैं। दिन में दो-तीन बार इनकी सफाई की जाती है।
थारुओं का घरेलू सामान कम होता है। प्रायः इसमें मिट्टी के बर्तन, अनाज भरने की छोटी-बड़ी कोठियाँ, मिट्टी की तिजोरी, आटा पीसने की चक्की, पत्थर का चूल्हा, धान कूटने का यन्त्र, हुक्का, कुछ खाटें, चटाइयाँ, पंखे और टोकरियाँ तथा शिकार करने और मछलियाँ पकड़ने तथा खेती के औजार होते हैं। थारू लोग नाचगाने के शौकीन होते हैं, अतः इनके पास मृदंग, ढोल, ढोलक, , तबला और हारमोनियम प्रभृति वाद्य यन्त्र होते हैं।
भोजन- तराई क्षेत्र के थारुओं का मुख्य भोजन चावल होता है क्योंकि यही यहाँ अधिक पैदा किया जाता है। चावल को भूनकर या उबालकर खाते हैं। मक्का की रोटी, मूली, गाजर की सब्जी, मछली, दाल, दूध, दही भी खाये जाते हैं। मछली आलू तथा चावल के बने जैंड (Gand) को बड़ी रुचि से खाते हैं। यह स्थानीय जंगली पशुओं का माँस भी खाते हैं। ये दिन में तीन बार भोजन करते हैं जिसे प्रातः कलेवा, दोपहर में मिंगी और सायंकाल बेरी कहते हैं। चावल की शराब इनका मुख्य पेय है।
वस्त्राभूषण- कुछ समय पूर्व तक थारू पुरुष एक लंगोटी से ही काम चला लेते थे। अब थारू पुरुष घुटनों तक धोती पहनते हैं। कभी-कभी घास का बना टोप भी काम में ले लेते हैं। अब अनेक थारू देशी जूते पहनने लगे हैं। पुरुष सिर पर बड़ेबड़े बाल रखते हैं।
थारू स्त्रियाँ प्रायः लहंगा पहनती हैं, जो बहुधा काला या गहरे लाल रंग का कसीदेदार होता है। यह 6 से 14 मीटर चौड़ा होता है, यह कमर से घुटनों तक जाता है। ऊपरी शरीर पर अंगिया या चोली पहनी जाती है और सिर पर काली ओढ़नी या चद्दर डाली जाती है। पुरुष संकरी मोहरी का पाजामा पहनते हैं। पुरुषों की अपेक्षा थारू स्त्रियाँ अधिक साफसुथरी और चटकमटक से रहती हैं तथा बनाव श्रृंगार का भी इन्हें चाव होता है। ये अपने पास एक छोटा काँच और कंघी रखती हैं जिसमें देखदेख कर ऑखों के सुरमे और ललाट की बिन्दी को ठीक करती रहती हैं। स्त्रियाँ बालों का जूड़ा न बनाकर कमर पर चोटी के रूप में लटकाती हैं।
स्त्रियों को आभूषण बड़े प्रिय होते हैं। ये पीतल, चाँदी, अथवा कॉसे के बने होते हैं। स्त्रियाँ हाथों में चाँदी का छल्ला, अंगूठियाँ, मुद्रिया, कलाई में पहुंची. बैसलेट, कड़ा, पछेली, छात्री, भुजाओं पर भुजबन्द या बाजूवन्द, गले में चाँदी के सिक्कों का बना कठला या हार, हंसुली, कानों में झुमका, वालियाँ, नाक में , सिर पर चाँदी के तारों से बनाया गया पूंघट, वालों में चाँदी की चेन, पाँवों में धुंघरू वाले कड़े या पाजेव पहनती हैं। पुरुष अपनी भुजाओं पर अपना नाम और स्त्रियाँ अपने पतियों का नाम अथवा हाथों पर फूलों की डिजायन, पतियाँ, हनुमान या शिव, आदि की आकृतियाँ बनवाती हैं।
मुख्य व्यवसाय- थारू लोगों का मुख्य व्यवसाय कृषि करना है। खरीफ की फसल आषाढ़ में बोयी जाती है और क्वार में काट ली जाती है तथा रवी की फसल कार्तिक में बोकर फाल्गुन में काटते हैं। कृषि के अन्तर्गत चावल, गेहूं, दालें, चना, मक्का, आलू, प्याज, सब्जियाँ, रतालू, , आदि पैदा की जाती हैं। यह नदियों में मछली पकड़ने का कार्य करते हैं। मछलियाँ अधिकतर जालों या बॉस की टीकरियों से पकड़ी जाती हैं। शिकार भी अवकाश के समय ही किया जाता है। सूअर, हिरन, खरगोश और पक्षियों का शिकार किया जाता है। वनों से जड़ी-बूटियाँ, जंगली पतियाँ (रेवा और पपारी) तथा जंगली फल (खागसा, पिंडारे, विरानी, वनमेथी, फालसा, आम) इकट्टी की जाती हैं। इनको खाने के काम में लाते हैं। फुरसत के समय ही टोकरियाँ बनाने, मिट्टी के बरतन बनाने, रस्सी बनाने, जाल, चटाइयाँ, वाद्ययन्त्र, मछली पकड़ने के फन्दे, आदि बनाने का कार्य किया जाता है।
थारू लोगों में श्रम विभाजन प्रचलित है। कृषि के लिए फावड़ा चलाना, हल चलाना, भूमि को बराबर करना, शिकार करना, फसलों की रखवाली करना, घरों का निर्माण तथा उनकी मरम्मत पुरुषों के कार्य होते हैं। घरेलू काम करना, सफाई करना, कुओं से पानी लाना, अनाज कूटना, भोजन बनाना, खेतों पर भोजन पहुंचाना, बरतन साफ करना, टोकरियाँ और मिट्टी के बर्तन बनाना, धान की मड़ाई और निकाई करना स्त्रियों के कार्य हैं। सामाजिक व्यवस्था- थारू जाति दो विशेष वर्गों (Moieties) में बंटी है- उच्च वर्ग और निम्न वर्ग ये लोग अपने ही वर्ग में विवाह कर सकते हैं। इनके गोत्र किसी पूर्वज या किसी सन्त पुरुष के नाम से चलता है। गोत्र में विवाह करना निषेध माना गया है।
ग्राम्य समुदाय का प्रशासन एक मुखिया द्वारा होता है, जिसे पधान (Padhan) कहते हैं। इसका कार्य गाँव का प्रशासन, सामाजिक एवं धार्मिक क्रियाएँ सम्पन्न कराना, ग्रामीणों से लगान वसूल करना तथा दैवी और अन्य आपदाओं की सूचनाएँ देना, आदि है। इसका चुनाव न होकर वंश-दर वंश होता है। पधान के स्थान पर काम करने के लिए सरदारकर (sarwarkar); अन्य छोटे कार्यों को सम्पादित करने के लिए चपरासी या कोतवार (kotwar) तथा सामाजिक और धार्मिक क्रियाओं को सम्पन्न करने के लिए भरारा (Bharara) होता है।
थारू जाति में मातृत्व प्रधान समाज होता है। स्त्रियाँ ही घर की सम्पति की मालिक होती हैं : घर, पशु तथा खेतों की पैदावार, उनके आभूषण स्वयं की अर्जित आय, आदि की। ये अपने पति की आय का भी इच्छानुसार उपयोग कर सकती हैं, किन्तु तभी तक जब तक वे उनके साथ उसी घर में रहते हैं।
थारू समाज में संयुक्त तथा वैयक्तिक दोनों ही प्रकार के परिवार पाये जाते हैं। संयुक्त परिवार में माता-पिता के अतिरिक्त उनके विवाहित लड़के और उनके लड़के-लड़कियाँ रहते हैं जो एक ही स्थान पर खाना खाते हैं। एकाकी परिवार में स्त्रीपुरुष अथवा उनके बच्चे रहते हैं।
विवाह- थारू समाज में विवाह जीवन का एक अंग माना जाता है तथा विवाह प्रथा पर्याप्त रूप से विकसित पायी जाती है। अविवाहित पुरुष की समाज में कोई प्रतिष्ठा, सम्मान नहीं होता। इनमें एक विवाह का नियम है, अनेक विवाह भी किये जा सकते हैं। सामान्यत: ऐसे विवाह कम होते हैं। विधवा अथवा तलाक शुदा स्त्री के परिवार वालों द्वारा पुनर्विवाह के लिए अधिक वधूमूल्य की माँग और थारू ख्रियों की स्वतन्त्र रहने की इच्छा कि वे अपनी सौत को बर्दाश्त नहीं कर सकती, अतः एक विवाह होते हैं।
विवाह करते समय इन बातों पर विशेष ध्यान दिया जाता है कि-
दोनों परिवारों की आर्थिक अवस्था अच्छी हो।
परिवारों की समाज में प्रतिष्ठा और कोई सदस्य किसी दूसरी जाति की स्त्री के साथ भागा नहीं हो अथवा उससे शादी नहीं की हो।
परिवार के किसी सदस्य को कोढ़ नहीं हो।
परिवार पर किसी बुरी आत्मा का प्रभाव नहीं हो।
लड़का और लड़की शारीरिक रूप से पूर्णतः स्वस्थ हैं।
विवाह में चार रस्में पूरी की जाती हैं-
दिखनौरी , जब पक्ष के लोग मझापटिया के साथ वर के गाँव जाकर वर पक्ष से बातचीत करते हैं तो इसका दिखनौरी कहते हैं।
अपना पराया (Apana-paraya) , जिसमें सगाई के बाद लड़के, पिता एवं अन्य लड़की के घर कुछ मेंट (मछलियाँ, गुड़ की भेली, मिठाई, वस्त्र, आदि लेकर जाते हैं।
बादकही (Badkahi), इस दिन शादी का दिन तय किया जाता है, जो सामान्यतः माघ महीने में रविवार या वृहस्पतिवार को रखा जाता है। तय हो जाने पर लड़के वाले की ओर से सुपारी अपने रिश्तेदारों को निमन्त्रण के रूप में भेजी जाती है।
विवाह शुभ मुहूर्त में पहले वरवधू को घी और हल्दी के जल से नहलाकर नये कपड़े पहनाये जाते हैं। विवाह हिन्दुओं की रीति के अनुसार होता है। सात फेरों के बाद एक रात के लिए लड़की को वर के घर ले जाया जाता है, जहाँ से दूसरे दिन वह पाने घर लौट आती है| धर्म- थारू लोग प्रेतात्माओं की पूजा करते हैं। अब ये हिन्दुओं के देवी देवताओं को भी पूजने लगे हैं। कालिका (दुर्गा, भैरव (महादेव), नारायण (सत्यनारायण), आदि देवताओं के प्रति अधिक श्रद्धा होती है। घरों में इनकी पूजा की जाती है।
इनके धर्म का मूल आधार भूतप्रेत एवं मृतकों की आत्माएँ होती हैं, जिनसे ये डरते हैं। दो प्रकार की आत्माएँ मानी गयी हैं- उपकार करने वाली पछौवन (Pachhauwan) और हानि करने वाली खड्गा भूत (Khadga Bhut)। इनकी परिवार के देवताओं के रूप में पूजा की जाती है। कई प्रकार की अन्य आत्माओं की भी पूजा की जाती है जैसे पर्वतीय जिसके अप्रसन्न होने पर बीमारियों का प्रकोप होता है। इसके लिए हवन किया जाता है। पुन्यगिरि बड़ी दुष्ट आत्मा होती है, वनस्पति आत्मा पेड़ों में रहती है, अरिमाल या भारामाल जो पत्थरों में निवास करती है, गाँव की देवी भूमसेन जो पीपल या नीम के नीचे रहती है। दुर्गा, काली, सीतला, ज्वाला, पार्वती, हल्का और पूर्वा ईसी के रूप हैं। इनकी समय-समय पर पूजा की जाती है। बाड़े में पशुओं की रक्षा के लिए करोदेव (या बाड़े की आत्मा), मृतक वीरों की आत्मा, आदि अन्य आत्माओं के अतिरिक्त भूत, पिशाच, , आदि की भी पूजा कर उन्हें प्रसन्न रखा जाता है। मुख्य देवता को ठाकुर (Thakur or supreme Being) कहा जाता है।
थारू लोग ईमानदार, सहृदय, शान्त प्रकृति वाले होते हैं, किन्तु अब मैदानी निवासियों के सम्पर्क से इनमें कुछ बुराइयाँ गयी हैं, जैसे- बालहत्या, आत्महत्या करना, आदि।
होली, दीवाली. जन्माष्टमी पर्वो को ये बड़े आनन्द से मनाते हैं। नाच-गान और शराब पीना तवियत से किया जाता है
